Given the way 4th handles advances and there is a definitive formula to Skills and Talents ( Skills: 8/6/4/2, and 4 Talents per level) Has anyone tried making some of the classes from old? Like Highwayman, Mercenary, Wardancer, Rapscallion, etc? I know some of these could just be renamed careers, but I feel some should be their own.
Any thoughts?
New Careers?

Is there an exhaustive index, somewhere, of compared WFRP1, WFRP2, WFRP3 (I presume that there was careers in WFRP3, right?) and WFRP4 careers?
I mean, not only in the rulebook but also in other publications.

I'm not aware of one, but it might be an interesting exercise for somebody.
WFRP v3 did have a career system not entirely unlike the other versions.

The closest to "exhaustive" would be the Career Compendium from 2nd Ed.Capitaneus Fractus wrote: ↑Mon Jul 08, 2019 7:03 am Is there an exhaustive index, somewhere, of compared WFRP1, WFRP2, WFRP3 (I presume that there was careers in WFRP3, right?) and WFRP4 careers?

I was looking at the Compendium last night and had a quick go at drawing up a spreadsheet to map them across to v4.
I think it might be better to look at career paths due to v4s tiered system which formalises the paths. I actually forgot just how many careers there were in v2, particularly looking at things like the Border Princes and Bretonia specific careers.
As pointed out, since v4 actually tries to balance careers, it should be easier to merge in missing ones and fill out any gaps in the tiers using the aforementioned formula.

That was my thought too. Merge several to account for differing levels in current careers. Personally, the only "hard" part would be deciding on Status for each one. And by "hard" I mean hardest part. Just need to remember to not be giving Hardy, Robust, etc all together at level 1 in one career. lolFasterThanJesus wrote: ↑Tue Jul 09, 2019 2:25 am I was looking at the Compendium last night and had a quick go at drawing up a spreadsheet to map them across to v4.

Some Italian guys mapped all the V2 to V4 character conversions (career, skills & Talents)
IIRC it's somewhere in https://www.wfrp.it/

I doubt I get all of the (official) WFRP1 careers, but here are 291 of them:
Any new sourced data is more than welcome...
Looking at WFRP4's apothecary sample (which correspond to the pharmacist of the 1st edition): http://cubicle7.co.uk/wp-content/upload ... r-Page.pdf
I wonder if there is careers entries and careers exit in WFRP4, and if there is also a concept of base and advanced careers... Can anyone here enlighten me?

careers are grouped into classes, rather than having exits so staying in job in one of the eight classes and then having for...i guess sub-careers for advancement. you can skip pretty much any which-way through careers, classes, and sub-careers though so i don't know if i'd called the higher level ones "Advanced" really. some of them aren't really related to their earlier parts of the track. this is also the first time nothing in the rules prevents you from leaving the slayer careers for something normal, but take that how you will.
the classes are academic. burgher, courtier, peasent, ranger, riverfolk, rouge, and warrior. for reference.

Cubicle focus seems to be in adventures & campaigns currently (this is off course not bad). But, that why I was hoping little more "bigger" core rulebook, with more famous careers. I'm pretty sure there will eventually start become regional and species sourcebooks, which will present these missing careers (Runesmith, Wardancers, Mercenaries, Pilots, Marauders…).
I think the formula of new careers actually makes most careers more easy to build. Just need to invent good Tier names. Example Mercenary could be something like Sellsword - Merc - Mercenary Sergeant - Mercenary Officer. And you could make it some sort of mix of Soldier and Guard. Then some could be more challenging, like building various Knightly Orders to unique careers and to give them different skills&talents to actually make them different.

Just a quick I threw together (finally had a chance to work on Warhammer). Please feel free to make suggestions/pick it apart. Trappings are missing, but I figure those are the easiest part really. Opening text is from 2nd Ed.
Highwayman
This won’t take long. Just hand over your jewelry. If you resist, it will all be over much quicker.
Highwaymen prey on the coaches that roam over the roads of the Old World, relieving lockboxes of their goods and passengers of their valuables. They affect the styles of the upper nobility, wearing elaborate masks and showing every point of etiquette to their victims, as they prefer to regard themselves as daring rogues rather than high-class Thieves. Highwaymen, by necessity, are skilled horsemen, adept at convincing their horses to race over uneven and treacherous ground at high speeds. They are also excellent shots, as they have to contend not only with swiftly moving targets, but a large number of dangerous forest denizens as well.
Desperado (Brass 2)
Skills: Animal Care, Consume Alcohol, Gamble, Intimidate, Perception, Ranged (Crossbow), Ride (Horse), Stealth (Rural)
Talents: Coolheaded, Criminal, Flee!, Rover
Highwayman (Brass 4)
Skills: Bribery, Charm, Evaluate, Intuition, Outdoor Survival, Ranged (Blackpowder),
Talents: Crack the Whip, Marksman, Roughrider, Seasoned Taveler
Road Agent (Silver 1)
Skills: Animal Training (Horse), Charm Animal, Leadership, Melee (Fencing)
Talents: Combat Aware, Fast Shot, Gunner, Menacing
Master of the Roads (Silver 3)
Skills: Lore (Empire), Navigation
Talents: Accurate Shot, Fearless (Road Wardens), Sharpshooter, Very Resilient

Looks good, but I'm not sure about "Master of the Roads". I'm drawing blanks on something better though.

If this career is intended to follow, somewhat, the romantic idea of the Highwayman, rather than that of them as greedy and violent brutes, maybe the term "Knight of the Road" could work?
https://www.thefreedictionary.com/knight+of+the+road
EDITED: Or maybe the careers can offer chances to either becomes a highly skilled robber on the road with few illusions about it, or a dashing and charming rouge living in freedom beyond the law?

I agree, but I was more thinking that the characters get to pick between alternatives depending on which way the highway robbery is done. So for example Ranged (Crossbow) OR Melee (Swords), Charm OR Intimidate and so on. Not making a separate career, although to be honest a bloat in the number of careers feels very Warhammery to me, who came into WFRP through 2nd edition.
I may take you to literal here, but I don't really see the problem with a equipment-basis for a career as opposed to skill-basis. There are after all only so many Skills in the system. Hell, I wrote up several melee specialistions for my group in regards to the 40k RPG Only War and bases them around the use of a weapon, and they seems to have come out alright.

the issue is that the entire role of the career is "you have this item now for taking the career" which forces the GM into the awkward positon of having to play nice with that gear, since if they get it destroyed they've effectively wasted the point of taking it. to the player it's fine, but when you're planning an adventure you can find that having that issue on board becomes something of an albatross around the neck (it's very hard to explain how you're going to have bandits take their purses when they've been drugged but don't try to fence an elven sword worth far more, for example)Knight of the Lady wrote: ↑Mon Jul 15, 2019 10:47 amI may take you to literal here, but I don't really see the problem with a equipment-basis for a career as opposed to skill-basis. I think I see your points, and from what you write I agree that it sounds like a problem. But it may be that I have a narrow experience from dealing with my own group, but wouldn't it be possible to explain to the player that, yes, you start with this expensive and rare weapon but you can lose it just as easy as anyone else can theirs, and there's no free lunch to get it back again. So be smart and careful with how you use and show it?Orin J. wrote: ↑Mon Jul 15, 2019 12:40 pmthe issue is that the entire role of the career is "you have this item now for taking the career" which forces the GM into the awkward positon of having to play nice with that gear, since if they get it destroyed they've effectively wasted the point of taking it. to the player it's fine, but when you're planning an adventure you can find that having that issue on board becomes something of an albatross around the neck (it's very hard to explain how you're going to have bandits take their purses when they've been drugged but don't try to fence an elven sword worth far more, for example)Knight of the Lady wrote: ↑Mon Jul 15, 2019 10:47 amI may take you to literal here, but I don't really see the problem with a equipment-basis for a career as opposed to skill-basis. Hell, I wrote up several melee specialistions for my group in regards to the 40k RPG Only War and bases them around the use of a weapon, and they seems to have come out alright.

At the risk of concentrating on the specific example too much, i would suggest that such thieves aren't necessarily in a good position to know what to do with a sword, especially a fancy looking one, and wouldn't know how to get rid of it, let alone who to sell it to or how much it was worth. They would be likely to leave it behind because it's easy to trace, or at least identify, as opposed to money, which isn't.Orin J. wrote: ↑Mon Jul 15, 2019 12:40 pmI think I see your points, and from what you write I agree that it sounds like a problem. But it may be that I have a narrow experience from dealing with my own group, but wouldn't it be possible to explain to the player that, yes, you start with this expensive and rare weapon but you can lose it just as easy as anyone else can theirs, and there's no free lunch to get it back again. .....That part didn't copy/paste. grr.FasterThanJesus wrote: ↑Mon Jul 15, 2019 5:49 am Looks good, but I'm not sure about "Master of the Roads". I'm drawing blanks on something better though.
Any thoughts for stats?
WS 4
BS 1
S
T 1
I 1
Ag 2
Dex
Int
WP
Fel 3
Close to what I had.
Begining: BS, I, Ag
Brass: Fel
Silver: T
Gold: WS
My thinking on Fel at Brass was that's when they start coming into the "idea" of Highwayman (career name, picking up Charm, etc), but that's part of the reason I posted it here.
