Ranged Combat Clarifications

Hello everyone!

I've recently started looking into 4e with a few of my friends in the hopes of running a campaign, but we're a little confused on how a few things in ranged combat work if somebody wouldn't mind providing some clarification?

The ranged combat rules state that they cannot be opposed with melee skills unless you have a large enough shield, or at point blank range, where it is also allowable to doge. Does that mean you cannot dodge ranged attacks outside of point blank? Otherwise a group armed with bows would be an incredible threat, and makes the dodge skill seem somewhat useless?

Sorry in advance if these rules are clarified elsewhere, I've just been having some issues finding them.

Basically you have it right. I suggest reading the unofficial FAQ:

I added in a house rule that if you spend you action to dodge (rather than just using it passively) you can also dodge missiles beyond point blank range (basically you are ducking and diving) - have not decided whether it increases the difficulty of the missile weapon check or is an opposed roll yet
