Has anybody else been following the previews of Warhammer: The Old World?

Thoughts, reactions, impressions?

Parts of it look good.
I like the addition/return of Skirmishing, Open Formation, Closed Formation.
I like the addition of Counter-Charging as a potential Charge Reaction.
I haven't heard anything about the Steadfast rule from 8th Edition which I think is a good thing.

So far, the codification of the turn phases looks pretty good, but I'm curious how they'll play out.

I'm intrigued by the way the magic phase has been split up depending on the spell in question. I'm curious how power and dispel dice will work or the mechanics behind how/if spells get cast.

I really don't like the continued inclusion of Premeasuring and random charge distances.

I like some things (including random charge distances) notionally but not necessarily in terms of their execution, and essentially it's 'I Go You Go', and even worse it's 'I Go and do my whole turn and then You Go and do your whole turn', and i think i'm done with that.

I suppose i might like some of the miniatures.

I'd be fine with Pre-measuring *OR* random charge distances, just not both together. Given my preference, I think I'd like to see far more deference given to a model's M stat, but that's splitting hairs at this point.

I agree with you, Totsuzenheni, I think some form of alternating unit activation would be very intriguing and would be a good thing (better than what we've got).

And I agree that if nothing else, I might get some new miniatures out of the deal.

I want to know in what direction it will go. I have still my Hochland regiment and... fingers crossed, new models will be in the same scale

I would expect *new* models (not re-releases of old kits) to be ever so slightly bigger (due to poses not model size), because the base sizes got bigger, so that they can include more details on the models, and so that they can be included/kitbashed with AoS models.

Because they're not resculpting the whole model range, I would also expect that any differences would be imperceptible (again, mostly due to different poses, not necessarily larger components).

I've no significant interest in playing or collecting an army, I will be picking up the odd model to paint if the style takes my liking. Certainly if they're a bit less ultra high fantasy AoS style.

I am interested in how it will impact WFRP (if at all) though and I'm definitely expecting retcons.

For the longest time, WFB was set in the year 2522 and the main conflict of setting at that point was embodied in Emperor Karl Franz vs Archaon.
WFRP 4e is now set in 2510(? I believe?), likely to give some breathing room to players who want to run The Enemy Within, and give enough time for things to calm down before the Storm of Chaos/End Times.
From what I've heard, the setting for The Old World is ~2300 and the main conflict of the setting will be Magnus The Pious vs Asavar Kul.

Given The Old World's status as a specialist game and not a (new?) entry in the lineup of main games, I personally am not expecting much retconning, because I don't expect them to do much in the way of big campaign events (Storm of Chaos, Albion, Lustria, Nemesis Crown, End Times, etc). With that in mind, I think from a business perspective, that Cubicle7 can and should try to put out some campaign books set in that time period, as a tie-in.

As a point of speculation around new models, given that they're not resculpting the whole old model ranges and largely just re-releasing old kits, I think it's quite interesting if new models will follow a more AOS style, if the new models will just be big monsters that are interchangable with AOS, or if they are made to fit into and stand alongside the older more toned down style of the old 6e/7e/other model ranges. Time will tell.

In other news: it looks like I may have been correct after all.

It will be interesting to see if this will be a setting book or a new system. I guess we'll see.

given we know the new games workshop game will be centered sometime during the three emperors period which is hundreds of years before the current warhammer fantasy RPG, i'd assume this is a period book.

And with some luck there might be more period books coming in the future. "Tomb Kings" before Nagash, time when Sigmar was alive and so on. Pre-Sundering Ulthuan and so on. Lots of cool stuff that I'd love to see. But I'll have to see what this first one might be like.

A couple of friends were playing this in my house last night. TBH, it did not look or feel that much different from WFB.

Not that I think this is necessarily a bad thing, but I was expecting something much more radical. To me, it essentially looks like just a rebranding.
