Re: Opposed tests vs single test

I feel we need a better way to rule what happens when someone is using a shield to oppose a ranged attack. everyone has felt this so far, and i've seen maybe a dozen different approaches, not including my own ideas. shields are gonna be quite the debate topic for 4th's entire run. Let's make this d...

Re: Opposed tests vs single test

I feel we need a better way to rule what happens when someone is using a shield to oppose a ranged attack. It should be the case that having a shield helps you simply because it offers cover, no matter how unskilled you are. So opposed rolls as in the RAW make little sense, as you can be worse off b...

Re: Melee (Parry) and Shields

There is no off-hand penalty for using a Shield for it's intended purpose, i.e. to parry. The off hand penalty for the shield is really weird. It’s like giving a penalty to wear boots on your feet. The shield is intended to be used in the off hand, that’s how you train if you have a weapon in the m...

Re: Melee (Parry) and Shields

Cap: so are you using only one type of shield? Damage alone is too small a differentiating factor to justify the gap in cost and encumbrance between a buckler and a large shield. Have you tried modulating the defense bonus, e.g. 10/15/20 from buckler to large shield? I assume no stupid off hand pena...

Re: Rules questions

When you take more critical wounds than your toughness (while you are at zero wounds?) you die. Another rule question that has nothing to do with this thread: spells do not care for cover nor for shooting in melee, they hit any target you can see in the spell range as long as you make a successful c...

Re: Melee (Parry) and Shields

Yes I agree with you. I seem to recall reading somewhere that shields grant the Shield* ability only when “used defensively”. This is why I was stressing it. I think it refers to using the shield to parry rather than using your own hand weapon. So I guess in principle one could attack with the shie...

Re: Melee (Parry) and Shields

I think you made 1 mistake (that didnt change result in this example). Defensive gives +1SL not +10. Its simillar but not the same. Rolling 55 would change the result. You have WS 40 Melee 10 - so 55 is fumble. Then you get +1SL from defensive. So you are +1, but still fumble. Thats why -20 from yo...

Re: Melee (Parry) and Shields

You are correct on all counts to the best of my interpretations. i think i'm now inclined to say that defensive qualities only apply in your off-hand unless they're fencing weapons as a house rule though. gods what a crapshack this book has proven to be. Thank you. So in your house rules one could,...

Re: Melee (Parry) and Shields

If you are defending and have an AP 2 shield in your offhand, your options are: With Melee (Basic) skill: 1. Roll using main hand weapon. Gain +1 SL (Defensive). 0APs. 2. Roll using offhand shield. Gain +1 SL (Defensive). 2APs. -20% on Melee (Basic) test. If you have the Melee (Parry) skill you can...

Re: WHFR 4e - Are Wizards playable?

About the smiley: my mistake. I am still thinking of Strength as something that goes from 1 to 10, as in the first edition of WFRP. So a Strength of 50 looked pretty scary! In effect it means the highest Strength bonus is going to be 5, so I see how this can be quite ok.

Re: WHFR 4e - Are Wizards playable?

new user Hi all, Here are somewhat random rule clarifications about spells. 1) On page 247 under the Lore of Fire description on reads that "you MAY influct the +1 Ablaze condition on anyone targeted by spells from the lore of fire". This should include all Arcane spells, a described at pa...

Re: WHFR 4e - Are Wizards playable?

Thank you everyone for your replies. They got me thinking and i found them very useful. My impression so far reading the rules and discussing it with people who have played the game is that channeling is too risky, so I'll probably just skip it altogether... it's just too easy to miscast when resort...

Re: WHFR 4e - Are Wizards playable?

Regarding casting Dart : the casting itself is a language check- it doesn't state what the difficulty is. this is.....up to the GM i guess. so it's probably the odds you think it is. however, dart is a magic missile and you add the SLs and your wizard's willpower bonus to damage, so it's probably l...

Re: WHFR 4e - Are Wizards playable?

One good news One thing that I missed is that Arcane spells gain special effects from each college of magic. For example, a Bolt cast by a Fire Wizard would also apply Ablaze I condition on the target (pag 247, thanks to Andy Leighton for pointing this to me). This makes Arcane spells more powerful...

WHFR 4e - Are Wizards playable?

Hello, Just posting here a thread I already posted in a bunch of other sites, because I would like to collect as many replies/opinions as possible. I went through the rules of WFRP 4th edition, and read some posts from people who have played one/several sessions. My impression is that playing a Wiza...
