Re: What and where is Zaiyon?

The mediaeval diaspora experience is indeed one of the claimed source of Tolkien's inspiration for Middle Earth's dwarves. However it is difficult to both stick with the "diaspora" and leave the "diaspora"... ;) I'm proposing that Warhammer should stick with the "diaspora&q...

Re: Enemy Within Updates (plus other stuff)

And yes, Emperor Heinrich was only mentioned three times in official publications, including the Empire in Flames Nice list of citations! Essentially the Enemy Within campaign was about the fall of the Habsburg dynasty. It sounds like there was some brief confusion in the early 90's over whether th...

Re: What and where is Zaiyon?

In fantasy fiction works, we can imagine everything. A people inspired by Aztec, Egyptian and Martian aspects might be imagined invading and occupying dwarven lost realms just like they can be imagined invading our own Earth's Near East in the past, the present or the future... just like any other ...

Re: What and where is Zaiyon?

[...] I don't see how greenskins could be anything but Muslims (or Crusaders). I suppose greenskins could be Romans if we go far enough back Be honest, which group of occupiers do you associate with "reclaiming Zion"? The Crusader analogy could maybe work in Karak Eight Peaks if the Musli...

Re: What and where is Zaiyon?

There is no logical connexion between "original Dwarfholds are Zion" (which isn't exactly what the text state, by the way) and "make greenskins Arabs/Muslims". Orcs and goblins might or might not be inspired by Arabs or Muslims (Hobgoblin tribes under the rule of Hobgobla-Khan a...

Re: Enemy Within Updates (plus other stuff)

Which is in line with Empire in Flames (and with The Enemy Within too on that aspect), were Karl-Franz is also emperor from 2502 IC. Ah true, although Emperor Heinrich Todbringer was never mentioned after Empire in Flames (well, maybe once in passing). The Enemy Within campaign wasn't Big Canon, it...

Re: What and where is Zaiyon?

It's possible that WFRP 1e Dwarfs were a sensitive allegory to Jews. However, Warhammer Dwarfs have since been GW-branded as cartoony grumblers with big noses, ancient grudges and obsessions with gold. Plus, if the original Dwarfholds are Zion, does that make greenskins the Arabs/Muslims? Lots of re...

Re: Enemy Within Updates (plus other stuff)

Yes, alternative SoC is probably a good way to look at it. But the point is that Archaon's ET invasion takes a different course to his SoC invasion, and involved different leaders of Chaos forces. Likewise, the activities of some of the Imperial leaders are different (e.g. Volkmar going to Sylvanni...

Re: Enemy Within Updates (plus other stuff)

Well, technically SoC doesn't happen in the End Times timeline, but I suspect C7 would go with something along these lines if they want to reconcile the two. I thought Archaon's 2522 IC invasion of Kislev in the ET campaign was essentially an "alternative SoC" that followed a more classic...

Re: Enemy Within Updates (plus other stuff)

I suppose one way for C7 to have their apocalyptic cake and eat it too would be to have Archaon invade and have inhabitants of the Old World assume it's the End Times even if it isn't. I think this terminology was even used around the time of the original Storm of Chaos campaign. How they actually ...

Re: What and where is Zaiyon?

But if we present Warhammer dwarfs as Jewish communities (as you referenced), we're equating a real world ethnicity with non-humans known for many traits (physical and cultural) which antisemites ascribe to Jewish people. That's what makes it dodgy for me. Yeah, maybe the analogy was more harmless ...

Re: What and where is Zaiyon?

Karak Eight Peaks would be another candidate (Gotrek's original hold). Although located in the Badlands, it's doomed to remain a battleground between Skaven, Greenskins and Dwarfs until the End Times.

Re: What and where is Zaiyon?

Not sure either, but since Dwarfs have never been evicted from Karaz-a-Karak (the Everpeak), I'd be inclined to make Zaiyon a state of peace and unity something like the Rastafarian concept of Zion. Either that, or make it a human name for Kraka Drak, the Norse Dwarfhold that was wiped out by Chaos ...

Re: HP Lovecraft

First episode a bunch of monsters go for some racists leaving the main characters to leg it. Though a few episodes later a haunted house scenario is less safe for them and in ep:9 a young family member is targeted by some creepy monsters so no-one should feel safe. I expect the monsters targeting t...

Some (but not all) of the Cthulhu-type creatures spare the black protagonists, meanwhile attacking the whit...

Re: HP Lovecraft

Having seen 9 of the 10 episodes of Lovecraft Country, I'll definitely read the novel after watching the series finale this weekend. Actual "Lovecraft canon" is very loose, it's really just a social justice story in the cosmic horror investigative genre. Naming the series after HPL is a do...

Re: Is Imperial polytheism realistic?

i think part of that is the tendency for the chaos-centric material to deliberately misinform as a way of "setting the tone" for much of the earlier days. I wouldn't be surprised if "preserving the mystique" was part of GW's reason for conflating Chaos, Magic and Divinity. Sever...
