Re: Investigator's skills
Lots of the careers are janky and have mistakes - I would discuss with your GM and suggest swapping one of the other skills out at the appropriate level for Research. I've done this for several of the players in my campaign

Re: Rule clarification: SLs and criticals hits
Yeah as written any double on a success is a critical, with the converse for fumbles. My group were not entirely happy with that so we play a slightly modified version: A roll is a critical if 1) It rolls a double, 2) has positive SL, 3) beats the opposing SL (only applies to opposed rolls) A roll i...

Re: Expanded Skills for Earlier Careers?
Cubicle7 claim they are going to release something, but no sight of it yet.
I always take a look at a career one of my characters is joining and make sure the skills, stats and talents make sense, if they don't I tweak them. But have not added extra skills to the first level yet

Re: Rules - Shield use
Rulebook says "You may use either hand to make an attack. Attacks made using your secondary hand suffer a –20 penalty to any applicable Test. " Thats for attack. Rolling defense is not an attack roll, why do people say shield is -20 penalty? Because the difficulty modifier table includes ...

Re: Shield dont give -20%
So if you want to be nerdy about it, you do not need to use the shield to defend, only be wielding it (you can defend with your primary weapon) Defensive Defensive weapons are designed to parry incoming attacks. If you are wielding such a weapon, gain a bonus of +1 SL to any Melee Test when you oppo...

Re: Stevedore - Dirty Fighting but no Melee (Brawling)?
Yes this is an issue with a lot of careers. If you look at the unofficial errata https://docs.google.com/document/d/1v37 ... J4u3A/edit there are a lot of errors in them which didn't get corrected
I dropped climbing and put in melee (brawling) instead

Re: Surprised opponents take less damage
The rules for attacking someone unable to defend themselves are (for whatever reason) described in the rules for the Unconcious Condition, which details that the attack automatically hits the location of the attacker's choice At the maximum SLs possible to score . Melee attacks are opposed rolls so...

Re: Ranged Combat Clarifications
I added in a house rule that if you spend you action to dodge (rather than just using it passively) you can also dodge missiles beyond point blank range (basically you are ducking and diving) - have not decided whether it increases the difficulty of the missile weapon check or is an opposed roll yet

Re: Why I think combat is less exciting in v4
Initially I found advantage tracking a bit of a pain, but did a couple of simplifications (ignore the stuff about outnumbering, be a bit flexible on when it starts ticking down out of combat) and have a tracker sheet which seem to make it manageable. That said I suspect in big fights I will end up h...

Re: Why I think combat is less exciting in v4
Have you tried the group advantage rules from Up in Arms? I have not yet, but I read several comments that it solves at least some of the issues of the advantage rules. I haven't used Group Advantage yet because it's even more abstract than the core system and we normally use minis for combat. For ...
