Re: Combat example

randomly interspaced full-page art that contributes nothing I like art in my RPGs. I don't think it contributes nothing. Attn RPG developers: please continue to employ graphic artists, IMO they add greatly to the content. Rules tell me how to play. A novel system of rules may make me curious about ...

Re: Combat example

I suppose in this day and age even if you buy the rulebook in a bricks and mortar store the next thing you do is hit up the internet to see what else is available. Yep. And I think this also figures into the '...for space reasons' problem too. The ability to provide supplementary material on-line p...

Re: Combat example

At worst, this "advice" should have been printed in the book at the beginning of the bestiary The first paragraph of the bestiary describes the 'build from starter example' approach. From Andy Law's post it sounds to me like the 'toolbox' approach they took was fully intended, they had specific rea...

Re: Combat example

Fights do swing from time to time of course and novice PCs can die one shot from a very bad roll (I am fine with that). But as GM unless you failed when balancing the encounter it’s not hard to keep things reasonnably under control and fine tune the feeling of danger in key moments with PCs in tier...

Re: Combat example

I can't see a reliable way to manage 4th edition swingyness+snowball effect in that. Fair enough. Do you think the Optional sidebar on p164 is a reliable way to manage 4th edition swingyness? Game-design is interesting to me... Personally I got more annoyed by denialism or proposal for "simple fixe...

Re: Combat example

What 4th edition provides intead is a crazy statistically-unstable mechanic that (thanks to opposed rolls and cumulative advantage) can be described as a ball that rests upon a hill: as soon as it goes one side it will snowball (the same happens when you start with a lot of advantage or a better st...

Re: Is it possible to increase the range of miracles with an initial range of touch?

i'm inclined to say "two systems following the same upgrade system share the same restrictions unless they state outright there is a difference I agree with that logic. But I would start with the premise that "the same upgrade system" here is blessings -> Miracles, not Arcane Spells -> Miracles. So...

Re: Is it possible to increase the range of miracles with an initial range of touch?

converse to easl, the rules for magic list largely identical rules for expanding effects under "overcasting" on page 238 and state that a range of touch cannot be extended magic /= blessings and miracles. They're in different chapters in the book and clearly follow different rules. i've consulted t...

Re: Is it possible to increase the range of miracles with an initial range of touch?

Question in the post subject. The rules seem a bit unclear on this. Would this ability make touch miracles overpowered? If you look at the Healing example given on p220, under "Success Levels," it appears that blessings with a 'touch' range can be extended. The limitation given on page 222 appears ...

Re: Combat example

I hope you're not using the argument "The book's monsters are fine except when you go to extremes like Zapp has". No, I'm saying that having to increase a limited number of opponent stats is a perfectly normal part of rpging for any game line not D&D sized. There's nothing unusual about a GM going ...

Re: Combat example

I understand that it went well for the party, maybe to well. He had already upped the stats of the beastmen and it is surprising that it still was relatively easy to beat them. I have no 4e experience (due to missing VTT support), so I cannot judge, if this should be expected at 5500 XP. Yeah, the ...

Re: unbalanced races

CapnZapp, makrellen this is exactly what I observed. That's why +10% for a charge (it's granted as the elves initiative is so high) and +10% for elves by default is already +20%. This is huge and that's what I've observed as elves are going for killing frenzy because of Advantage. This is why I sug...

Re: unbalanced races

A human with a stat of 45 vs an elf with a stat of 55 is going to win 40 % of the time - the elf will win 60 % of the time. Except I asked habankm about that, and this isn't the problem he's worried about. He's worried about players playing a human being outclassed by another player playing an elf....

Re: unbalanced races

Having said that, when PC1 has an initiative score of 60 and PC2 has an initiative score of 50, PC1 will win initiative about 60% of the time. It's highly unlikely PC1 would go first in each combat of a single session, if the session has more than 2-3 combats. D'oh! Big goof. I was running out the ...

Re: unbalanced races

1) I + 1d10 to decide order -> this one always win elf or beasts It sounds from this like you're doing a "human [fast-warrior] vs. elf [same fast-warrior career] using same build-out" comparison. The reason this doesn't apply to real-game experience is that that almost never happens. There aren't (...

Re: unbalanced races

That's why elf vs human is a bit o headache. High elf stats means he will survive battle when others probably not. Did you actually experience this in gameplay, or are you looking at the stats and assuming it will be true? Just curious. I think what some of the others are saying is that they have n...

Re: Channeling VS Channeling (Any Colour)

Given that Channeling is a Grouped skill and needs a focus and that there is a Lore of Witchcraft, I am assuming it was supposed to read Channeling (Witchcraft). That's how I'm running it. As for counting for Wizard, I would say no, as Wizards are practitioners of color/wind magic. I would say you ...

Re: unbalanced races

Why would it be less enjoyable for other players? I would think it would be a good roleplaying opportunity. I mostly agree. In my many years of playing and GMing, I've never had the case where two players wanted to play the exact same "archetype". So the hypothetical situation of (for example) the ...
