Re: WFRP 4 analysis

Yes I am aware the original flaw that spelled doom to the solidity of the whole system was the statistic of opposed rolls used to force an output from every round of combat. On the top of that there must be what you said: the attempts to "fix" it or smooth it, with other rules. But also th...

Re: WFRP 4 analysis

Wow, this thread is huge and is a gold mine of competent analysis and experinces about 4th edition. The overall idea I maturated about people playing 4th edition is that bascally NO ONE is playing RAW and house-rule the very fondations of the rules or change it up to it be unrecognisable. Is it a si...

Re: 4th to 1st rules adaptation

We've run a massive campaign in 4E. Will never use the ruleset again - next time we're back to 2E. So I've thought about which bots and bobs that can be salvaged. The players liked the open-ended careers system. But ultimately it just isn't balanced. There's a reason skills are secondary to charact...

Re: Combat example

risk that cannot be properly controlled by the gamemaster isn't a good thing . I somewhat disagree. Players do crazy things, including taking risks the gamemaster never anticipated them taking. These situations can be hard to GM (especially if you're GMing a set adventure, rather than a more sandbo...

Re: Combat example

I can't stand to play D&D anymore - the assumption that the encounters are 'balanced' takes away any sense of danger and leads my groups to limit their strategies to 'charge' (This is both as a player and GM). This doesn't happen in WFRP This never happened in WFRP. Balanced doesn't means "...

Re: Combat example

Modding without being a mod mode On. Steaming pile... Steaming turd. Could we please stop crossing the limit and keep this debate to a reasonable level of decency? Not that I'm anyhow offended by those terms (I use far worse terms in my daily life) but I can see this kind of talk will get us nowhere...

Re: Combat example

Plain censure or expressed discomfort for one player expressing his negative thoughts about any given game is something that I really grew bored of. From the WFRP forums sponsored by the local publisher and translator... ...to Facebook groups where admins receive free books to "review". Th...

Re: Combat example

... I think the OP is pretty good. I'm yet to play WFRP v4 in anger yet and I'm due to start up TEW in the next month or two. I have issues with decisions from just reading the rules and some of those issues are confirmed by some posts on the board. However, there are things I like in v4 and often ...

Well, thousand thrones is pretty grimdark (overall, there's fluctuation between chapters tho).

The Nurgle mansion chapter is terrific in that sense!

Re: Combat example

... One of my issues isn't with the game necessarily, it's with the posters here. All of the "4th sucks, go back and play 2nd!". My response is PLEASE DO! and leave this section to discuss 4th. But people ARE discussing 4th edition. (I’m not trolling) Sure, controversy is vivid and some c...

Re: Combat example

... It was a case of "Lead designer (Dom) and Lead producer (Andy) do not agree". But instead of having one of them call the shots they just agreed to disagree and put in optional rules instead. If you follow Andy's comments on discord he has already stated this. Which incidently has spar...

Re: Dual Wielder talent analysis

The rules for this are rather complicated: Dual Wielder Max: Agility Bonus Tests: Melee or Ranged when attacking with two weapons When armed with two weapons, you may attack with both for your Action. Roll to hit with the weapon held in your primary hand. If you hit, determine Damage as normal, but...

Re: Comparison with Zweihander

IIRC my memories from Baldur’s Gate D&D videogame tell me that chaos star was also used there for some spell, not sure if tied to Chaos or to a simple “confusion” effect of some spell. WIKI tells us this: “The symbol's first appearance in a commercial role-playing game (RPG) was in TSR's Dungeon...

Re: Comparison with Zweihander

It's not like the Warhammer universe is really that original to begin with. It's packed to the brim with other works with the serial numbers were filed off. That seems more like "inspiration" to me: multiple sources, mash-up result with several new elements. One source with changed names ...

Re: Comparison with Zweihander

The easiest thing today is to legalise theft. I'm not sure it's the best way to put the matter. I would say though that in modern days and with certain immaterial matter (no pun intended) is hard and harder to demonstrate "theft" or mischievous use of intellectual property. You sell ThatN...

Re: Combat example

Thanks OldPlayer. Would you consider, after your next play session, writing up here a summary of one of the party's combat scenes? I greatly appreciated CapnZapp's write-up. It illustrated very well his concern with the bestiary section. (Though speaking only for myself, it didn't do much in the wa...

It's not like Warhammer is without its influences. File off the copyrighted material from any one part of Warhammer and you might be hard pressed to say if Warhammer were the primary influence, or if Warhammer's infuences were the primary influence. Do you really want me to re-open that chapter and...

Re: Combat example

Capping Advantage is a mandatory thing to do to make the game at least playable IMO, from what I’ve read and from the little I’ve tried. Do I think that’s a RELIABLE way to reduce swingyness? Ehm, no: all it does is reducing snowballing (reducing an amplification effect tied to how Advantage works)....

Re: Comparison with Zweihander

Ok let me refrain it. Zweihander is a theft, that tries to hide itself through legal ways on the basis I am generic. This alone should tell everyone, stay away. Not quite sure if you’re sarcastic or serious… ...and not sure if this is what OP is looking for.. Anyhow....theft or not is a matter of l...

Re: My hopes and expectations for WFRP4 (repost)

WFRP4 disappointed me greatly, mainly for its core mechanic “opposed rolls+advantage snowball effect” and the derived Advantage mini-game/meta-game and Advantage centrality in the mechanics (talents and such). These were my hopes at the time, let’s recycle them for a 5th edition then :P (from 2nd ed...
