Re: Rules - Shield use

Rulebook says "You may use either hand to make an attack. Attacks made using your secondary hand suffer a –20 penalty to any applicable Test. " Thats for attack. Rolling defense is not an attack roll, why do people say shield is -20 penalty? Because the difficulty modifier table includes ...

For targeteer the closest equivalent would probably be Archer (from up in arms), I’m guessing?

Re: Examples of use of creatures

Yes, you can add stats to creatures like spiders. There’s a few examples of that in the Imperial Zoo (take a look at Ol’ Gribbleback on page 19, compared to the base Razorgor). I think you might also be underestimating the base Arachnarok, however. The outnumbering modifiers are very powerful in 4E,...

Re: Examples of use of creatures

The level of detail given to NPCs in adventures varies a lot. While there'll always be a full Attribute stat line (WS, BS etc), some NPCs get all the skills and talents appropriate for their career(s), while others will only get skills the writer deemed important (usually the combat focused one - yo...

Re: Balance between mosters and pcs

Hi all I have recently bought WFRP 4 and I am wondering a bit about the balance between pcs and monster. So I have a few questions for those of you that have been playing for a while. A starting human warrior has around 55 in WS a Stormvermin 45, Orc 35 and Chaos warrior 55. So are player character...

Re: Shield dont give -20%

Because any action performed with your offhand suffers a -20 penalty. The attack rule quoted is just a specific example, not an exclusive example. Trying to paint with your offhand? -20. Throw a dagger? -20. Parry an attack? -20.

Re: Stevedore - Dirty Fighting but no Melee (Brawling)?

Also, something to keep in mind is that Stevedores have WS as a career attribute. If you give them Melee (Brawl) on top of WS and Dirty Fighting, you’re basically making Stevedores martial arts masters. I think Stevedores not having the skill is very deliberate. They’re not supposed to be king fu ma...

Re: 4t Ed Starter Kit - WS inconsistency?

No, you should be using the 62. She has Melee (Basic), the character sheet just isn’t displaying it. Given she has WS 49, you can deduce that her Melee (Basic) is 13 (62 - 49). The section where it says you should test against WS 49 + 10 seems to be in error, or at least is ignoring her Melee (Basic...

Re: 4t Ed Starter Kit - WS inconsistency?

So someone making a test roll would usually be rolling against their Attribute + skill. In the case of an attack with a sword, that would be WS + Melee (Basic). If they were attacking with a weapon they were not skilled in, they would just roll against their WS. The starter kit - because it was a st...

Re: Stevedore - Dirty Fighting but no Melee (Brawling)?

I think the problem with that house rule is that IIRC there are talents that basically give you that bonus as the primary feature of the talent. So what you’re proposing is essentially doubling the value of the talent for certain careers. I’d also question why it’s necessary - why not leave it as it...

Re: Stevedore - Dirty Fighting but no Melee (Brawling)?

Yes, you can use Melee (Brawling) untrained, so Dirty Fighting would help with that. You’d have a character who knows a few sneaky moves, but isn’t really a trained brawler. That said, each of the tier 1 careers is supposed to be getting 2 more skills, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Stevedore got Mel...

Re: You can lose the opposed test and still deal a Critical hit

Yes? Is this a question? You cause the crit (and the wounds associated with it) but not the wounds you would normally cause if you’d won the opposed test. You could also win the opposed test, while also fumbling (say you roll 55 for -2 SL but your opponent gets -3 SL), so you inflict damage but also...

Re: Surprised opponents take less damage

Yes I’m theory you could inflict more damage if the defender rolled poorly, but as it is you get +30 to hit (+20 for surprise, +10 for advantage), which effectively means +3 damage. Assuming you hit you’ll be starting the next round with 2 advantage, and your opponent misses their turn, so all toget...

Re: Why I think combat is less exciting in v4

Have you tried the group advantage rules from Up in Arms? I have not yet, but I read several comments that it solves at least some of the issues of the advantage rules. I haven't used Group Advantage yet because it's even more abstract than the core system and we normally use minis for combat. For ...

Re: Old World Religion

This setting is a bit contradictory - it wants to be politically correct and it wants to be dystopian. This is a common mistake people make when looking at Warhammer - the setting is not (and never has been) supposed to be dystopian. The Empire (and the other realms of the Old World) are corrupt, c...

Something to consider regarding your first point is that in 4ed there’s no requirement for a priest to have the Miracle talents. You only need 1 career talent to finish the career, so an NPC can have one of the others.

Re: Changing career tier

I don’t put any restrictions on when a player can level up a career, but I do limit the status gain until it’s justified (generally by gaining all the trappings). Basically you can begin buying the skill and talents etc, but no one is going to consider you the head of a knightly order until you have...

Re: It's Your Funeral - anybody played it?

I ran it a few months ago. It was good fun, with the players constantly being distracted and confused by the different plot threads. It’s an adventure that definitely has to be played for laughs. Note that we haven’t played through any of the Rough Nights adventures, so I’m not sure we’d enjoy it as...
